Quel message  l’artiste Peter Saul a-t-il voulu faire passer à travers Bewtiful and Stwong ?

Cassius Clay – Mohamed Ali – semble être dépeint tel un  « Superman » incarnant et personnifiant la « force » « – Stwong » – : le bleu et rouge utilisés sont les couleurs faisant référence au costume du héros.

Devant l’érotisation de ces corps déformés, le  spectateur s’interroge : s’agit-il d’êtres humains? Cassius Clay est clairement reconnaissable! Bewtiful and Stwong est un habile mélange de styles picturaux et de codes esthétiques , à savoir l’expressionnisme abstrait – avec la déformation de la réalité – ,  le pop art – à travers les couleurs utilisés –  et le  maniérisme italien –  à travers l’allongement des formes et la proportion des parties du corps.

Ces corps érotisés sont en dissonance avec les symboles religieux intégrés dans l’espace pictural, à savoir, les auréoles et la croix. Or, ces références religieuses, confèrent un caractère prophétique au tableau.

Cependant, les couleurs de peaux non humaines, à savoir le vert et le bleu, tendent à propulser l’oeuvre dans une nouvelle dimension; ce qui permet un éloignement avec les faits de société propres aux contexte social de 1971, outre-Atlantique, à savoir les mouvements pour les droits civiques.

Tableau fantasmagorique, allégorie picturale, Bewtiful and Stwong semble marquer une nouvelle ère, l’aube d’un nouveau jour. Le boxeur Cassius Clay, une icône pour la communauté afro-américaine, change la donne, en devenant une référence  dans le domaine de la boxe, un modèle et l’espoir de toute une communauté.

Which message  did the artist Peter Saul  want to pass through and Bewtiful and Stwong?

Cassius Clay – Muhammad Ali – seems to be depicted as a « Superman » embodying and personifying the strenght « – Stwong » -: blue and red colors used are referring to the hero’s costume.

In front the eroticization of these deformed bodies, the viewer asks: is it human beings? Cassius Clay is clearly recognizable! Bewtiful and Stwong is a clever mixture of pictorial styles and aesthetic codes, namely Abstract Expressionism – with the distortion of reality – pop art – through the colors used – Italian Mannerism  – through the lengthening shapes and proportions of parts of the body.

These bodies are eroticized in dissonance with religious symbols integrated into the pictorial space, namely, aureoles and cross. However, these religious references, give a prophetic character to the painting.

However, non-human skin colors, namely green and blue tend to propel the work into a new dimension, which allows a distance with the social events specific from the movements for civil rights context  , across the Atlantic  .

Phantasmagoric allegory painting, Bewtiful and Stwong seems to mark a new era, the dawn of a new day. The boxer Cassius Clay is an icon for the African-American community, contributing to change the African-American’s image, becoming a reference in the field of boxing, a model and hope to the whole community.
